Apple CFO Hints to an iPhone 5 September Release

Record Profits for Apple at the End of Q3

Several days ago, the Cupertino-based company announced its financial results for the third quarter of the 2011 fiscal year, which ended on June 25th. During this quarter, Apple profits have increased by 125% and the company sold 20.34 million iPhone models. Thus, Apple exceeded analysts’ expectations, who predicted that only 16.5 million iPhones will be sold in Q3. The company also sold 9.25 million iPads and 3.95 million Macs.

Apple’s revenue for the quarter came to a total of $28.57 billion, with a net profit of $7.31 billion, which is double than what the company earned during the third quarter in 2010. International sales accounted for 62% of revenues this quarter.

During the conference call when these results were announced, Apple’s Chief Financial Officer, Peter Oppenheimer, said that one Apple product will go through an important transition by the end of September, and taking into account the impact that this transition will have, the company estimates the revenues for the fourth quarter to be 12% less than those of the third quarter.

Since Oppenheimer didn’t say anything else about the future product transformation, everyone thinks that he was talking about the much anticipated iPhone 5. With new products (newest generation MacBook Air, Mac Mini and OS X Lion) released this week, Apple can now focus its attention on the next generation iPhone.

While many of us expected to see a new iPhone 5 in June, new rumors claim that the delay in release is due to problems with an overheating A5 chip. Apparently, Apple can’t keep the processor at a low temperature in the tightiPhone 5 case.

Recently, Apple filed a patent for an enhanced voice control system which will probably be implemented in the future iOS 5. This system, named “Adaptive Audio Feedback System and Method” would apply to alerts, menu navigation and prompts.

AT&T and T-Mobile Test the iPhone 5

Although the launch of the iPhone 5 is rumored to take place in September, it seems that AT&T and T-Mobile have already started testing the new smartphone from Apple. Beginning July 6th, a few iPhones were delivered to the two carriers’ testers, who have the mission to verify that the fifth generation iPhone is working properly and, if not, to report any issues back to Apple.

It is perfectly normal for Apple to have its mobile phones tested by carriers, but the beta testing usually happens shortly before the official release. A job offering posted on a British website indicates to a sooner than September release as well. The offer specifies that Apple is looking to hire people for the iPhone sales team. iPhone 5 rumors point to metal back and larger screen

The latest batch of leaked information from Apple’s Foxconn production plant indicates that the next iPhone might have a metal back and a larger screen along with the rest of its new bells and whistles,according to 9to5mac.

The glass back on the iPhone 4 became a bit of a pain point, striking up a micro-scandal that the media dubbed “glassgate.” Any case outside of Apple’s official iPhone 4 bumper could lead to scratching and full-on cracks in the phone’s glass back. The cases are prone to dust and other matter getting stuck between them and the iPhone 4’s glass back.

Introducing a metal back to the iPhone is in line with Apple’s design ethos — it fits with the company’s unibody Macbook Pros and other devices. A metal back would also kill Apple’s concerns with the white iPhone 4. Bad white iPhone 4 parts, including the paint for the device, caused issues with its proximity sensor due to light leakage, according to Apple’s Steve Wozniak.

But a metal back for the device would make it more difficult to transmit a radio signal through the rear of the phone. That means near-field communication (NFC), a short-wave radio form used to transmit information and execute mobile payments, probably wouldn’t make it into the next version of the iPhone. Indeed, sources from Apple already said that NFC would not make it into the next iPhone but could make it into later iterations.

The next iPhone will probably include Apple’s newest A5 chip, a 1 gigahertz dual-core processor that appears in the iPad 2. The iPhone 4 was announced in June after tech news blog Gizmodo got its hands on the device well ahead of its scheduled announcement.
