Why Was There No iPhone 5 This Summer?

After the somewhat disappointing WWDC 2011 where no new hardware was unveiled (although we were impressed by iOS 5), a big question was brought up. What exactly would have been the reason behind Apple breaking the iPhone tradition of summer releases which they have carried on since the first iPhone launched?

No iPhone 5 this summer: 3 reasons

At the time, reports suggested everything from battery supply issues due to the earthquake in Japan, and also the very near release of a Verizon iPhone 4 and white iPhone 4 models.
Now Sohu.com has another:
According to BGR who cites the source, "Apple may have delayed the iPhone 5 launch until next year due to an overheating dual-core A5 chip", and that "Apple will instead launch the iPhone 5 later this year or early next when the A6 chip is available - or after it figures out the A5 overheating problems." The source also adds that a “iPhone 4S” device, with the same form factor as the iPhone 4, will launch alongside the iPhone 5. It will pack a dual-core processor and 8-megapixel camera.
Given that the iPhone 5 is going to sell in the millions when it launches, Apple will need to make sure it has a solid supply of non-faulty processors at hand. Furthermore we would expect an unforeseen event such as a manufacturing defect to be the kind of reason where Apple would actually deviate from their predictable June releases of new iPhones (iPhone 2G, 3G, 3GS and 4).
More on this as it develops.
